Your students should guide you in the kind of help they expect with Mandarin language. If your student is enrolled in a Mandarin course, they will probably want you to help with assignments or to give them speaking and listening practice. Opportunities to improve your English skills The majority of students have beginning level Mandarin skills, so discussion in your meetings about Chinese language and culture will probably be mainly in English. This should give you plenty of practice in speaking and listening. If you want a more formal language exchange arrangement or specific help with some aspect of English, discuss this with your student early on in your meetings. Most students are happy to help you to practise English, particularly speaking. Training opportunities ALMA usually provides some training for new tutors early each year. These training workshops are free of charge, though participants are expected to join ALMA. Tutors who complete the workshops can receive a Certificate of Participation. The workshops are conducted bilingually in English and Mandarin and are led by practising language teachers. The training is very practical and introduces you to some of the common problems that learners encounter in learning Mandarin and how you can help them. You are also introduced to a range of teaching materials. These may be particularly useful if your student is not enrolled in a formal course. Attendance at the workshops is not compulsory. Volunteer tutors can join the project at any time throughout the year. Teaching resources The ACT public libraries, particularly Dickson and Tuggeranong, have a wide range of Chinese language resources that you and your students can view and borrow. Financial members of ALMA can also borrow materials from ALMA¡¯s small collection of textbooks and other Chinese language teaching materials |
